Many years ago, a couple halted their carriage to pick a few apples growing in an orchard beside the lane on which they had been driving...a common habit among travelers in the area. The Marcus brothers who owned that orchard, however, weren't pleased that people were helping themselves to the apples. So, over time, they encouraged weeds and then trees to grow over the lane.
Today, thick trees mark the position of the old lane, and only a few, aged apple trees remain of the original Marcus orchard. But the Shenandoah Valley is still home to many orchards, and a new lane runs parallel to the old one. The new lane and the farm that borders it are called Appelveldt.
